LEXIVA can be a key part of HIV treatment
LEXIVA has many benefits when taken with other medicines for HIV. If you have not taken protease inhibitors before, and are starting therapy with LEXIVA plus ritonavir, you may be able to:
- Enjoy the convenience of eating and drinking whenever you want; LEXIVA can be taken with or without food
- Take LEXIVA once-a-day with ritonavir, if your healthcare provider recommends it
- Use common antacids or heartburn medications without worrying about changing how LEXIVA works*
- Be less likely to have serious diarrhea as a side effect†
- Take less ritonavir per day (100 mg) if your healthcare provider recommends it
HIV resistance
If HIV becomes resistant to a certain medicine, it means that the virus has changed itself in such a way that the medicine is no longer useful in fighting it. When this happens, you might need to switch medicines altogether, and this can limit your treatment options.
This kind of resistance did not happen during a study of people taking LEXIVA with ritonavir over 120 weeks.

* LEXIVA without ritonavir may be less effective because of decreased amprenavir plasma concentrations in patients taking H2-receptor antagonists concomitantly. No dose adjustment required with proton pump inhibitors when administered at at the same time as LEXIVA.
† In a study versus nelfinavir serious diarrhea was experienced by 1 in 10 patients taking LEXIVA versus 2 in 10 patients taking nelfinavir.
